A police inspector has been demoted to sergeant for trying to extort money from drone operators in Lagos State.
State police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the demotion to reporters on Saturday.
He said: βThe disciplinary process against the police officers who harassed a drone operator at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge has been completed.
βHis rank was demoted from Inspector to Sergeant.β
Hundeyin on April 6 responded to a viral video showing two police officers asking permission from a drone operator on a bridge.
He said police officers acted legally by seeking permission from the drone operator.
βFor emphasis, Nigerian aviation law stipulates that a permit must be obtained from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for the operation of any drone weighing more than 250 grams anywhere within the country.
βNevertheless, the Lagos State Police strongly condemns the unprofessional actions of the officers in attempting to extort the drone operator as seen at the end of the video.
βThe Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Adegoke Fayoade, has ordered the Commander of 49 PMF Akodo, whose squadron stationed the policemen on the bridge, to take the men for appropriate disciplinary action,β the spokesman added.
