Police in Delta arrest six suspected kidnappers, seize over N2.3m ransom

The Delta State Police Command has arrested six men suspected of kidnapping and recovered over N2.3 million in ransom.

Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwanda Olufemi, announced the arrests on Thursday during a briefing where he listed 16 suspects allegedly involved in various criminal activities.

Olufemi highlighted the command’s recent achievements and detailed plans to enhance police visibility, including raids on crime-prone areas across the 25 local government areas.

He explained, “Based on credible intelligence information, officers from Ebrumede Division, while on patrol, intercepted a tricycle carrying six passengers.”

The suspects attempted to flee upon sighting the police but were quickly pursued and arrested. A search of the tricycle yielded a ransom of N2,344,000 and some suspected stolen mobile phones. “Further investigation revealed that the mobile phones belonged to the kidnap victims and the money was part of the ransom paid for their release,” Olufemi added.

In addition, the anti-kidnapping squad successfully conducted an operation in Umunede forest area, rescuing two persons who were kidnapped along the Asaba-Benin Expressway. According to Olufemi, “When the kidnappers realized the police were approaching, they abandoned the victims and fled.”

Olufemi also touched on the issue of drug abuse in the state, recounting an incident when a Naga Patrol team intercepted Jammed Abdulahi Shola, a 39-year-old man, while he was driving a green Toyota vehicle along the Asaba-Agbor Expressway.

He said the search uncovered 320 packets of codeine, 125 sachets of tramadol and a large quantity of other hard drugs.
