Police were killed when armed people attacked the Division Police Headquarters in Enugu

Armed people in the early hours of Monday attacked the Awgu Division Police Headquarters in the Enugu state and killed a police officer identified as AKPA Emmanuel.

Spokesman for the State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement in Enugu that several other police officers were injured in the attack.

He added that the attackers carried weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and two riots from the weapons.

Ndukwe said the new police commissioner in the state, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, had deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, Police Forces (PMF), Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and other tactical teams to strengthen security in the division.

Residents of the community told reporters that the armed men were touched to invade the police division very early and began to shoot sporadically into the complex.

“The attackers also damaged facilities at the station and made several weapons. At present, there is tension in the City of Awgu with the presence of severe security because the eye agents and other operators have taken over the area,” said a resident.

Armed people hiding under the agitation of Biafra in the southeast have killed dozens of police officers and destroyed billions of naira worth facilities and equipment in the region since February 2021.
