PPSN raises alarm on unhews unwillingly, connects the crisis to the spread of neglected tropical diseases

The Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria (PPSN), Southwest Zone, has warned that non -safe water remains an important factor of neglected tropical diseases (NTD) in Nigeria, insisting on the fact that interventions based on drugs alone cannot reach the elimination objectives of the World Health Organization (WHO) 2030.

In a declaration issued to mark on the day of monitoring the waters of 2025, observed every year on 18 September, the secretary of the South-West PPSN, Dr. Tajudeen Uthman, underlined that millions of Nigerians remain at risk of diseases such as Schistosomiase.

“The fight against NTDs cannot be won only by medicines. We must integrate the distribution of drugs with the monitoring of prolonged water, the improvement of the hygienic-sanitary services and the guided protection by the community of water sources. In this way, we break the cycle of infection and build healthier and more resilient communities”, said Dr. Uthman.

He observed that while preventive chemotherapy has significantly reduced the load of the disease, reinfection rates remain high in many communities due to the absence of clean and safe water.

The company, therefore, urged families, schools, leaders of the community and politicians to expand investments in water, hygiene and hygiene (Wash) and to make the monitoring of water quality a regular practice at local and regional level.

He also asked for education from the strongest community on safeguarding water resources.

According to PPSN, the World Water Monitoring Day should be a reminder that access to safe water is not only a need for health, but also a weapon against poverty and preventable diseases.

“Together, we can accelerate progress towards a Nigeria and a world free from diseases that thrive on unsafe water,” added the declaration.
