President Tinubu urges governors to collaborate on food production and economic assistance

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, called on state governors to work together to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen the economy and provide immediate economic relief to Nigerian households.

Speaking at a National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, Tinubu stressed the need for collective action to meet the needs of citizens.

“Now is the time for action,” Tinubu said, urging governors to work together to implement critical reforms.

He offered federal support for mechanized farming, high-quality seeds, and solar-powered irrigation facilities to increase food production.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of producing high-quality food for domestic consumption, job creation and export-led wealth generation.

He asked the governors to report back within seven days on their needs and requirements to achieve this goal.

He said, “Our countries must work together to bring about the vital reforms necessary to meet the needs of our people. Time is humanity’s most valuable asset. You can never have enough of it. It’s getting late.

“We are ready and able to support you in the form of mechanizing your agricultural processes and providing high quality seeds.

“We are ready to provide solar-powered irrigation facilities to support our farmers throughout the season, but now we have to produce. We have to produce food according to the needs of our people, and this requires coordination and intentionality between members of the National Economic Council (NEC).

“There is nothing more important that we do than produce high-quality food for our people to consume, buy and sell. We create jobs in its production. And that is before we generate wealth by exporting the surplus. It is not impossible for us to achieve this for the people of Nigeria.

“How much support do you need from me, and in what form? I am ready to provide it. But we have to achieve the results. We must achieve our targets at all levels. Please report back after your consultation and send it to my office within seven days.”

The president’s call comes as Nigeria faces food security challenges and economic pressures.

Collaboration between the federal government and state governors is seen as vital in addressing these issues and improving the lives of Nigerians.
