By Joseph Amedu, Lokoja

A court of the magistrates chief of Lokoja has postponed a case of alleged negligence presented against two operators of boats in Kogi, until 26 May 2025.

The Kogi Police Command, through its national wing for the National Authority (Niwa), accused Musa Dangana and Yakubu Dangana, both residents of Lokoja, with conspiracy and negligence that led to an accident with the boat that killed 19 out of 60 passengers on the boat.

The police accused the defendants, who jointly owned a commercial transport of 60 passengers from the icupine area in the area of the local government of Lokoja to the Kacha market in the state of the Niger without providing life jackets or considering weather conditions on November 29, 2024,

It is assumed that they had not been exercised due to vigilance despite different warnings against the night trip and traveling without rescue jackets, which would have led to the loss of life

They had declared themselves not guilty

When the case came due to further mention in front of the magistrate Capo Abdullahi Musa-Mopa, the accusation consultant, Mr. Ubana Ibi, he told the Court that the investigations on the case had been concluded by the police.

Ibi said that the accusation would need a date to correctly block the process.

“My Lord, we have concluded our investigation on the matter. We will ask for a date to allow us to come correctly before you for listening to the case,” he begged.

The defender councilor, Mr. Zakari Useni did not objected to the update application.

“My Lord, although we are not objecting to the application presented by the accusation, we were not served with the materials that could guide us on the matter on the updated date.”

“We must have the necessary materials to allow us to present our defense correctly,” he said.

The magistrate Capo Musa-Mopa ordered the accusation to make any necessary material available on the case for defense so that they could come correctly on the next date.

He then updated the case until May 26 for hearing.
