Prisons of the Finnish Court Simon Ekpa six years for terrorism

The District Court of Päijät-Häme in Finland sentenced the pro-Biafra agitator on Monday, Simon Ekpa, to six years in prison after declaring him guilty of multiple crimes related to terrorism.

Ekpa, a self -produced lawyer and leader of a separatist movement that pushed for the secession of Biafra by Nigeria, was sentenced for having incited terrorism and that he actively participated in the activities of a terrorist group.

According to the Finnish newspaper Yle, the Court established that between August 2021 and November 2024, Ekpa used its vast social media platforms to instigate violence and unrest in the south-eastern region of Nigeria.

The jury of three men said that Ekpa was “an influential figure in a militant separatist group whose final goal was to forcefully carve out a state of biafra”.

The Court also established that the Ekpa facilitated the supply of weapons, explosives and ammunition in groups armed through a network of international contacts.

He was also stated in soliciting his followers on the Social Media X platform (previously Twitter) to commit acts of violence in Nigeria.

In addition to the beliefs of terrorism, the Finnish court also declared it guilty of aggravated tax fraud and violation of the provisions of the law on prosecutors.

Ekpa, who had long been a controversial figure in Nigeria’s political and safety discourse, has constantly used his online transmissions to issue “sit-AT-home” orders and directives that often became violent, paralyzing economic and social activities in different southeast states.

The Finnish government had previously frozen the Ekpa activities and declared that the crimes for which the process was not on their feet were not upward, arousing diplomatic attention from Nigeria.
