I can see the bitterness in his eyes saying that . Anything related to water simulation is extremely challenging in 3d not talking about full environments for a short film.but I think you can do it with a few more cups of coffee 😉

I don't know if it's a good decision, it promised to be a very artistic and emotional project. Perhaps Blender Studio could ask for more capital from the community or incorporate interns to speed up processes. Blender has a great community that wouldn't hesitate to help. Really sorry to hear you won't be completing this project….. did you discuss scaling everything down to make it more manageable? So you can make a similar animation, but just not as huge as you anticipated?
Incredible work by the whole team! Sad to see it stopping but definitely understandable with that scope and all the new tech and workflows you need to develop. Regardless of the final film, the project files are already such a wealth of knowledge

Really sorry to hear that you've been struggling with this project guys, we all know that you worked really hard and did your best. The art and models you have made so far are fascinating and beautiful.
Such an ambitious project; perhaps you just didn't realise how ambitious it really was. A full length movie with these kind of visuals ? That's an undertaking that we normally only see from big studios with huge budgets.
It takes a lot of courage to admit that we are not able to complete something we have committed ourselves to, but better that we do it sooner, rather than later. Thank you for everything you have done so far.

I'm curious, since this is one of the open movie projects for Blender, will all the production files (i.e. Blender files, concept art, storyboards) be available to the public? I'd be curious if others could potentially finish out version of the film.
That must be disheartening for everybody involved. I'm sure the decision is the right one, though. Too bad because the art direction looks amazing and the node tools (shards, corals…) are super cool.
I'm deeply enjoying seeing this project eveolve and seeing them talking about these technical and artistical challenges! SO INSPIRING.
Since im not interested in story. All i want to see is that painterly style and hopefully some improvements in texture painting that come from it.

Honestly it feels like no one who is working on this project is happy with working there, and it feels like it's coming from a lack of good project and team managing and experience

but well Project gold is one of those projects that will always be new, unforeseen, wild and strange… now that I'm writing this I have to think of the song tribute by Tonacios D.
Yes, there's a bit of slapstick involved, but the bottom line is that you can't grasp certain things and in the end you can only make a tribute
I know Gold was there as an idea like a dream, everything was just not connected and I died a little death of anticipation inside

I don't really understand the difficulty with shot continuity that they mentioned at the end. If the story boards sell the progression, couldn't they just make smaller more curated bespoke sets for the individual shots, and stich them together in post?

Very sad to see this shelved. It did really look very very ambitious and I'm looking forward to seeing what's been made.
Are the issues purely organisational (say, need more people or need more careful earlier planning before heading into asset creation for stuff that completely changes) or did you run into some other limitations?
I hope you'll also eventually do a retrospective on this one.
