PROTEST: Sanusi says security forces knew of planned looting in Kano but failed to act

The 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has given an explanation for the violence and looting that occurred during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano State.

He attributed the violence and looting to the failure of intelligence and security forces to take proactive steps.

During a visit to assess the damage to a number of properties, including Kano Printing Press, NCC Digital Industrial Park and Barakat Stores, the Emir criticized the security lapses that led to the damage.

The property was vandalized on August 1, the first day of protests, by individuals who hijacked what was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration, causing significant damage and looting.

“As we always say, anyone involved in this is an enemy of Kano and its people,” the Emir said.

He stressed that the attack was pre-planned and security agencies had been warned but failed to act.

“Before this incident, the security forces had been notified in writing that this incident would occur, but instead of preventing it, they allowed it to happen,” complained Emir.

The emir condemned those responsible for the destruction, and expressed his disappointment at the damage to the historic Kano Printing Press, which was established in 1938. “My grandfather used to work here. It is sad that a place like this is being destroyed by their grandchildren,” he said.

During the inspection, the Emir prayed for divine intervention and justice, saying, “Whoever does good knows, whoever does evil knows, and they will all see the results. We pray that God will give the government a chance to restore what has been lost.”

He added, “We pray that God will help these youths, and whoever is behind it, God will deal with him. By God Almighty, those who are bent on destroying Kano will not succeed.”

Muhammad Tajo Othman, the state Commissioner for Science, Technology and ICT, assured that the state government had been authorized to repair damaged property and replace looted items.

He also noted that the NCC Center, which was scheduled to be inaugurated this week, had been vandalized and partly burned.
