The Bauchi State chapter of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has written to the state Accountant General seeking permission to scrutinize the government’s financial activities, including debt profile, financial interventions, mandatory allocations and expenditure.
The letter signed by the party’s Secretary in the state, His Excellency Abdulazeez Haruna, was based on the Freedom of Information Act which requires public bodies to disclose certain information to the public.
According to Haruna, the letter dated September 10 was a follow-up to the previous letter on September 2 which was not responded to, even though the letter was important for the public to know and to be used as material for the regional government’s financial audit.
The contents of the letter read in part:
“We are writing to remind you of our request for information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2011, filed with your office on September 2, 2024. As you are aware, we are seeking certain information regarding the debt profile, statutory allocations, financial interventions and expenditure of the Bauchi State Government.
“As you know, our request was made under the Freedom of Information Act 2011, which requires public bodies to disclose certain information to the public. We believe this information is important to the public’s understanding and oversight of state government financial activities.
“However, despite our request being more than seven days old, we have not received any response or information from your office. Since the seven-day deadline has expired, we are writing to remind you of your obligation to provide the requested information within the timeframe set forth by the FOIA.
“We are compelled to remind you that failure to provide the requested information within the stipulated timeframe may be seen as an attempt to circumvent transparency and accountability. Therefore, if we do not receive a response within the next 14 days, we will not hesitate to take legal action to enforce our right to access this information under the Freedom of Information Act.
“We believe that the Bauchi State Government has an obligation to provide transparent and accountable governance to its citizens. Our request is not only legitimate but also vital to public understanding and oversight of the financial activities of the state government, and we expect a prompt response.”
