While Nigeria has marked the 2025 edition of Workers’ Day, the legal and financial expert, dr. Gbenga Adeoye has delivered a Clarion appeal to public employees throughout the country, describing them how the national development machine room and urge both public employees and political leaders to support a culture of service, responsibility and respect.
Speaking in a message that commemorates workers’ day, Dr. Adeoye stressed that no nation can thrive without a vibrant, ethical and effective civil service.
He underlined that the fate of the progress of Nigeria is strongly based on the conduct and efficiency of his public workforce.
“If public employees work well, there will be national development; otherwise, the nations will fail,” said Adeoye. “These are the machines that guides government policies, public services and economic stability”.
By contacting the Nigerian workers directly, Adeoye urged public employees to move their attitudes from apathy and bureaucracy to one of the patriotic services.
He implored them to treat every citizen and organization whose file appears on their desk as their employer and reason for their work.
He criticized the all too common perception of the public service as a favor given to citizens, rather than a right, and has listed several government bodies in which a reform in public interaction is urgently necessary.
These included regulatory bodies such as Nafdac, Son, EFCC, FIRS, Nigerian Dustoms and CBN, among many others through federal, state and local levels.
“There is a prevailing problem in which people who need government services are treated as beggars,” adaoye observed. “This must stop. The service must derive from joy, diligence and respect for the citizen.”
He recommended the practical steps to improve the provision of the service, including: timely management of files and approvals, rapid recovery at work,
Avoid unnecessary delays and bureaucratic bottlenecks, maintenance of clean and orderly work areas, supporting the tax discipline and integrity in the management of government resources.
In a direct message to public employees, he added: “Do not make life difficult for investors. Every investor who lose influences the creation of jobs and national wealth”.
He also warned workers not to hit with politicians in corrupt practices, advising instead of safeguarding public funds and supporting professionalism in all relationships.
By turning his attention on the political class, Adeoye urged the elected officials and appointed to treat public employees with dignity, equity and due consideration.
He underlined the importance of providing public employees with dignified working conditions, an equitable remuneration and professional development opportunities.
“Not just deploying unqualified people in the departments they know nothing about,” he warned. “We have to place the round pegs in round holes to reach effectiveness.”
Other recommendations included quick payment of tips to retirement, adequate staff to reduce the stress of the workload and updates of regular skills for public employees.
In his final observations, Adeoye reiterated the indispensable role of public employees in national progress.
“There is no country without a lively and reliable civil service. Politics guide, implement programs and guarantee continuity in governance.”
He asked for a renewed sense of the purpose and national pride between all public workers, exhorting them to refuse the label of “evil servants” through an honest and impact service.
