Club Brugge defeated Monaco 4-1 to open his UEFA Champions League campaign with style.
The star of the Super Eagles, Raphael Onyediedika, opened its account for the season with a beautiful attack. Nicolò Tresoldi, Hans Vanaken and Mamadou Diakhon were also on the score sheet.
Onyedika offered an outstanding performance beyond its goal.
The Nigerian midfielder completed 45 precise passes, including five in the final third, and created a clear opportunity.
Defensively, it contributed significantly with two crucial blocks that avoided the potential objectives and made two key interceptions.
Despite his strong performance, Onyedika was replaced in the 81st minute and seemed visibly frustrated when he left the field. Chief coach Nicky Hayen later clarified the situation:
“Onyedika had indicated that I was feeling some discomfort. We only had a substitution due to Simon’s injury, and we had to handle it carefully.
“There was a little lack of communication about it. I want to be fast about it because we are not only eleven, but 20 or 25 players.”

There were also praised the dominant performance in the first half of his team, praising the players for preventing Monaco from settling in his rhythm:
“How many points would you give my team today? For the first half, 10 out of 10. I read somewhere that we won against a weak mono, but it is for our credit that we do not allow them to enter their game from the minute.
“We play well between lines and especially exploit the space behind its defense, which resulted in many opportunities.
“The only inconvenience could be that the score should have been much higher, but, of course, we are very happy with this result. We know that the difference of objectives can also be important, so in that sense, this is an excellent beginning.
“It was night and day compared to Saturday. The energy and passion of our captain were an example for all leaders with the example.
“The way he played was the highest class. But, of course, we expect that in all games, and not only today. And that applies not only to Hans but to the entire team.
“In the background, I still feel bitter because we let him escape on Saturday. Hopefully, that game against the Louvière was a call of attention.
“We just need to be more consistent. Against the Rangers and last year against Atalanta, we also offered excellent performances, but then we eliminate points in the League. We have to continue working to reach that high -level game after the game.”
Club Brugge will return to the Liga’s action against Sint-Truidense VV in the Belgian Pro League.
After a mixed start of the third season wins, a draw and two losses of six games, the next meeting is seen as a must for Hayen’s men.
