Residents slam former Ekiti Governor Fayose for saying the many wives and children of northerners are the cause of Nigeria’s problems

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose drew backlash after he said the failure of the then federal government to develop Nigeria was due to northerners marrying many wives and having many children indiscriminately, causing major problems for Nigeria and becoming a burden on the government.

Fayose, who made his comments in an interview on Channels TV on Monday night, said there was no reason for Nigerians to protest because the famine in the country did not start under Tinubu’s administration but as a result of the large population from the north.

When asked what he thought the government could do to alleviate the suffering of millions of Nigerians under Tinubu’s watch as Nigerians prepare for the #EndBadGovernance protests on August 1, Fayose said:
“The reason why it is difficult for Tinubu to develop Nigeria is because the Northerners are giving birth to children they cannot care for.”

She went on to share her personal experience of how she came to know about haphazard marriages and child births in Northern Nigeria.

“Let me tell you this. I was in a state in the North. I won’t name the state. I was there for three days. While I was there, I got to know the people around the official residence where I was staying.

“I sat outside and started talking to one or two people. I asked the gatekeeper how long he had been in government. He said he had been in government for 26 years. I asked him how much he earned. He said it was a small salary, N34,000. I asked him how many children he had. He said 16. I asked him how many wives he had. He said four.”

“Brother, the problem is within… For God’s sake, if a person earns N34,000, what can the government do with 17 children? We don’t want to be unrealistic.

“Others say he has eight children and three wives, one of whom is still pregnant.

“There’s a lot to do with our people too. Because when you have children and you come into a government, a government that’s struggling to survive, it’s hard when you ask me what am I going to say to them. What am I going to say to a man who has 17 children and four wives?”

However, the former governor’s comments sparked outrage on social media, with many users condemning his remarks, which they said were an indictment of parts of the country.

While others felt such comments should not have come out of his mouth when Nigerians are grappling with hardship, high cost of living and hunger due to government policies.
