Revision of the Constitution: South-West governments require the State Police, true federalism

Governors of the southwestern region have renewed their request for the establishment of the State Police and the full implementation of true federalism, insisting on the fact that the current centralized system has not faced the worsening of the worsening of security and tax challenges of the country.

The governor Aiyedatiwa, who hosted the session, led the accusation, declaring that decentralizing the nation police structure became inevitable when insecurity intensifies throughout the country.

He indicated the security network of western Nigeria, popularly known as Amotekun, as a model proven security based on the community that deserves constitutional support.

“The current centralized police structure is no longer sustainable,” Aiyedatiwa warned. “Amotekun has demonstrated the effectiveness in facing basic security problems. State police legalization will not only authorize states, but will also bring security to people closer.”

Aiyedatiwa also pushed for constitutional amendments that would have inaugurated true federalism, underlining the need for federal units to obtain greater autonomy on their political, cultural and economic affairs.

He supported a tax structure in which states maintain control over their resources and put a percentage agreed in the federal stock exchange.

“In line with fiscal federalism, states should control their resources and put back about 40 percent in the center,” he said.

“The current revenue allocation formula is distorted in favor of the federal government and needs an urgent review in the interest of equity and justice”.

By supporting the call, the governor Adeleke described the constitutional revision process as a fundamental opportunity to correct long -standing imbalances and renovate Nigeria in a more functional and fair federation.

Governor Oyebanji echoed to similar feelings, urging the legislators to follow the cries of the Nigerians and use the constitutional revision in progress to guide a significant reform.

The public audition has attracted the parties concerned throughout the region, including traditional sovereigns, groups of civil society, legal experts and young people, many of whom have supported the position of the governors and asked for a quick action.
