Saraki urged the PDP to complete the leadership dispute before the NEC meeting, the Convention

Former President of the Senate and Chair of the People’s Democratic Party Reconciliation Committee (PDP), Dr. Bukola Saraki, has asked party leaders to immediately resolve the remaining disputes over the party’s National Secretary Office.

He described it as an important step before significant progress, such as holding a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) or holding a successful national convention, can be made.

Speaking during interviews on Arise television Friday night, Saraki said that the unresolved leadership dispute had become a significant obstacle for internal unity and strategic planning in the party.

“This is a problem that has existed for some time,” Saraki said. “Before we can have a smooth convention, we must first hold a NEC meeting, and before that, we need to approve who our secretary is. The problem has lasts a long time and does not begin today, but now, we must face it directly.”

In the heart of the controversy is the leadership crisis of who holds the position of the National Secretary. Although the Supreme Court’s decision was submitted on March 21, 2025, which confirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as a legal PDP National Secretary, several factions in the party continued to reject the decision, thereby stopping the main party’s function.

Saraki noted that even the clarity given by the referee of the Nigerian election, the Independent National Election Commission (Inec), had not fully extinguished differences of international opinion. Given the new meeting between PDP stakeholders and Inec officials, he said strong consensus had been achieved, validating Anyanwu’s position.

“Nine out of 10 of us at the meeting received Inec’s position that as far as it was involved, the party secretary remained Sam Anyanwu,” said Saraki.

The former Senate President, who has led the reconciliation effort in the party, emphasized that sustainable deadlock was not only a procedural problem but also that damaged the credibility and capacity of PDP to position itself as a decent alternative in the Nigerian political landscape.

“This is not about politics or personality,” he said. “The world is watching. We have said there is no personal interest here. We are only guided by what can be accepted by law.”

Saraki urged party leaders to rise above the interests of faction and prioritize unity, warning that without internal harmony, the party is at risk of losing the footing before the upcoming election contest.
