Saudi doctors successfully perform world’s first robotic heart transplant

Doctors at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, have performed the first robotic heart transplant in history.

A 16-year-old patient with end-stage heart failure received treatment that took nearly two and a half hours.

According to reports, the patient was chosen in part because he made a specific request that his chest not be opened by a cardiologist.

Before performing the procedure on the patient, the team practiced nearly seven times over three days.

Such innovations are seen as having the potential to move heart transplantation operations away from conventional open-chest techniques, which require long recovery periods, ranging from weeks to months.

To ensure accuracy and minimize risks, the process begins with careful theoretical planning.

The successful procedure has been heralded as a major advance in heart transplant surgery, replacing the conventional open-chest procedure that requires a long recovery time.

At the time, KFSHRC Organ Transplant Center Executive Director Dr. Dieter Broering told Al Arabiya English that the specialized hospital has dedicated the past 40 years to making the Kingdom a leader in organ transplantation worldwide.
