Security agency spokesman claims troops killed 857 suspected terrorists in June

The Inter-Agency Strategic Policy Communications Committee (SCIPC) said on Thursday that troops deployed to various operational areas killed 857 suspected terrorists in the country last month.

SCIPC is a committee of military, police, intelligence and response agency spokespersons established by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Police Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, delivered the update at a press conference in Abuja.

He said troops also arrested 1,638 suspected terrorists and other criminal elements and rescued 921 kidnapped hostages during the period.

Adejobi said his troops recovered 894 arms, 21,538 ammunition and denied oil thieves received an estimated amount of over N5 billion during the month.

The police spokesman noted that the firearms and ammunition that were successfully confiscated included 313 AK47 rifles, 76 locally assembled rifles, 92 Dane rifles, and 14,243 rounds of special 7.62 mm ammunition.

Others were 4,209 rounds of 7.62 mm NΑΤΟ bullets, 222 rounds of other types of firearms, and 3,369 rounds of other types of ammunition.

Adejobi said: “Also recovered were 3,994,080 litres of stolen crude oil, 1,879,630 litres of illegally refined AGO, 29,275 litres of DPK and 26,900 litres of PMS among other items.

“In a major victory, a notorious terrorist was arrested in Yobe on June 13.

“Further demonstrating the proactive stance of the security agencies, on June 15 the army announced the deployment of 5,937 new troops to combat banditry, separatist agitation and other threats.

“The MNJTF also eliminated 70 terrorists in the ongoing Operation Lake Sanity 2 in the Lake Chad Basin in recent airstrikes targeting terrorist camps in Cameroon and Nigeria.

“The operation resulted in the deaths of many terrorists and forced others to flee to Chad.

“The operation also destroyed eight vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) near Arinna Ciki and an ammunition bunker northeast of Malam Fatori.”
