The Senate on Thursday issued a strong death to the Minister of Defense, Mohammed Badaru, urged him to refrain from making public statements that could suppress relations between the National Assembly and the Government of President Tinubu.
This follows the Badaru dismissal of the two -day national security summit planned by the Senate as unnecessary. Speaking during the briefing of the minister in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister believes that the improvement of the strategy – not the Summit – is the key to overcoming Nigeria’s unsafe.
“The strategy is far more important than the peak,” Badaru said. “The Summit will provide input for strategy, but operational orders come from defense leaders, not from public discourse.”
His statement triggered a strong reaction during the plenary session on Thursday, with the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio and the leader of the Bamidelle Opeyemi Senate warned that such comments at risk of ruining legislative and broader cooperation efforts needed to overcome national security challenges.
Akpabio, clearly not happy, condemned the Minister’s public dismissal over the Senate Initiative.
“If the Ministry of Defense has a problem with any Senate resolution, it should not overcome it in the market,” he said. “It must reach the president of the senate or elder of the senate. Such public statements can cause unnecessary executive-legislative conflicts.”
He stressed that the senate remains committed to national priorities, despite the potential for disturbance.
Bamidel echoes this concern, which states that minister’s comments can prevent dialogue and constructive cooperation.
“We were chosen to work for the people and support the president’s agenda. But when we were misunderstood or damaged publicly, it became difficult to build synergy,” Bamidle said.
He added, “That the Minister of Defense can describe the National Security Summit supported by the Senate because it does not need to be troubling. Summit may be imperfect, but they remain an important way to gather various perspectives to inform strategic decisions.”
The Senate reiterated its commitment to contribute significantly to the national security discourse and call for respectful involvement between government weapons.
