Serap tells President Tinubu to suspend “clearly illegal illegal response” for politicians – Thage

The project of socio-economic rights and responsibilities (Serap) urged President Bola Tinubu “to direct the allocation of the mobilization of the revenue and the tax commission (RMMAFC) to immediately suspend the holders of political and unconstitutionally illicit and unconstitutional unconstitutional salaries.

The president of the allocation of the mobilization of the revenue and the tax commission (RMMofc), Mohammed Shehu, last week, mentioned the plans to review the salaries of the owners of political offices in Nigeria.

Shehu, who described the current salaries of the president, ministers and other owners of public offices such as “unrealistic, inadequate and obsolete”, said that President Bola Tinubu currently earns n1.5 million months a month, while the ministers bring home less than n1 million, figures that have not changed since 2008.

Reacting to the planned remuneration excursion, Serapi urged President Tinubu to “reject the imminent increase in wages for politicians and encourage your vice -president, governors and their deputies, a legislators to do the same.

“Direct the Prosecutor General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, San, to guarantee a full and effective respect for the judgment of justice Chuka Austine Obiozor who directs the RMAFC to review the salaries and the allowances of the members of the National Assembly to reflect the economic reality in the country.”

In the letter of 23 August 2025 and signed by his deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said: “The constitutional and statutory mandates of the Armafc do not clearly imply the unbridled powers to increase the salaries of the president, vice -president, governors, their deputies and lawyers.

“The suspension of the imminent increase in wages for the owners of political offices would serve legitimate public interests. When the exercise of the constitutional and statutory mandates of RMAFC should prevail to support these rights.”

According to Serapi, “rather than seeing the salaries of the owners of political and public offices down to reflect the current economic challenges in the country, the commission is arbitrarily increasing the salaries for the president, the vice -president, the governors and their deputies and legislators”.

The letter states in part: β€œRmfac cannot legitimately or legitimately increase the wages of the president, vice -president, governors and their deputies and legislators at a time when over 133 million Nigerians are poor and several state governments are unable to pay the wages of workers and pensions.

“Rmfac seems to act coherently to give advantage of the prisoners of political offices on the interests of the poor Nigerians. The RMFAC, in the exercise of its constitutional and statutory mandates, should balance the interests of the marginalized and vulnerable sectors of the population against the interests of political interests.

“Rmfac should give priority to the cutting of excessive annual amounts as allowances for owners of political offices and pensions of life for former presidents, vice -presidents, governors and their deputies and legislators.

β€œThe imminent increase in remuneration for the owners of political offices is a serious violation of the provisions of chapter 2 of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] relating to the fundamental objectives and executive principles of state policy and international human rights obligations.

“The combined provisions of chapter 2 and chapter 4 on fundamental rights, in particular section 42, give meaning and substance to the socio-economic rights of the Nigerians and their right to equality and non-discrimination.

“Directly the RMFAC to suspend the imminent increase in wages for the owners of political offices will be completely consistent with your constitutional oath of office and your commitment often expressed, including work to guarantee” a better company “and” the collective sacrifices of all of us “, as indicated in your inauguration speech.

“Serap supports the upper review of remuneration, salaries and indemnities and service conditions for Nigerian judges in order to face the persistent low treatment of judges and improve the access of the victims of corruption and violations of human rights to justice and effective remedies.

“The President of RMAFC, Mohammed Bello on August 18, 2025, said that the Commission decision to propose an increase in salary for the president, the vice -president, the governors and their deputies and legislators in Nigeria on the seriously imperfect ground that the salaries for these offices owners are tiring.

“The Commission said that the” revision package “remains right, realistic and sustainable” and “aligns with the current socio-economic realities of the country.

β€œAccording to him, the allocation formula was last reviewed in 1992, saying that there have been several executive adjustments since 2002, but until now a revision on a large scale has not been undertaken.

“Serap notes that judge Chuka Austine Obiozor of the Federal Court, Lagos, ordered the Armafc to review and fix the salaries, the remuneration or allowance of the members of the National Assembly to reflect the economic realities in the country.

β€œThe sentence dated June 4, 2021 followed the consolidated causes presented by Mr. Mondaggio Ubani, John Nwokwu, over 1,500 Nigerians, Serap, Budgit and enough are Nigeria enough (EIE).

“Pursuant to sections 154 (1) and 156 (3) and paragraph 31, part I of the third program to the Nigerian Constitution, the members of the Commission are appointed by the President subject to confirmation of the Senate.”
