Serap urges Tinubu to disseminate the selection process for the new Inec – Thage president

The project of socio-economic rights and responsibilities has given President Bola Tinubu seven days to spread the details of the selection process and appoints for the successor of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose mandate as president of the independent national electoral commission ends in November 2025.

In a letter of September 27, 2025 and signed by his deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, Serap said that the appointment of the replacement of Yakubu “cannot and should not be a closed shop”. He urged the president to ensure that the process is transparent, open and responsible.

“There is a strong correlation between transparency in the selection and appointment process of the INSC President and the Commission’s ability to perform its constitutional and statutory functions independent and impartially,” Observed Serap.

The organization asked the President to reveal the number and the names of the candidates in question and if the Council of State was or would have been consulted, as required by the Constitution.

He also invited Tinubu to reconsider the appointment of at least three alleged members of the All Progressiveives previously confirmed as resident electoral commissioners and replace them with non -partisan appointed.

Serap warned that if the president does not act within seven days of receiving the letter, it would take legal measures to force compliance.

The group stressed that the opening in the process would have built the trust of the public in the independence of the inac, would improve the participation of citizens and would reduce the perceptions of prejudice, in particular after the disputes relating to the general elections of 2023.

Citing pertinent sections of the 1999 constitution and the electoral law 2022, Serap claimed that the secrecy in the process would undermine the independence of inac, to compromise the electoral integrity and erode the right of citizens in the free and fair elections.

“The credibility and legitimacy of the elections depend mainly on the independence and impartiality of those who are appointed to manage the process. Without an independent Iner, the Nigerian democratic rights would remain illusory,” he said.

Yakubu, who was appointed for the first time in 2015, will complete his second five -year term in November 2025.

His successor will be expected to immediately assume the assignment, subject to the confirmation of the Senate.
