Kashim Shettima, Vice President of Nigeria, on Sunday, returned to Abuja following his role representing President Bola Tinubu at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Shettima’s visit comes amid Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen international partnerships and address global challenges. His presence at UNGA 79 was significant as it enabled Nigeria to amplify its voice on important issues such as climate change, security and sustainable development.
In his capacity as a representative, Shettima delivered the Nigerian National Statement at the General Debate. “We are at a critical moment in history, and Nigeria is committed to collaborating with the global community to address pressing challenges,” he said.

During his stay, he participated in various bilateral meetings and side events, encouraging dialogue on Nigeria’s role in international affairs. He expressed optimism regarding future collaboration, saying, “These discussions are critical to the growth and security of our countries. We must work together to create a sustainable future.”
Upon his return, Shettima will join President Tinubu in an event to celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day. His spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, emphasized the importance of the Vice President’s involvement at the UNGA, stating, “His presence underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global dialogue and cooperation.”
With UNGA support, Shettima is now focused on leveraging the insights gained during his visit to drive Nigeria’s development agenda forward.
