Some religious groups more corrupt than public officials – EFCC

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has accused some religious groups in Nigeria of being more corrupt than public officials.

Olukoyede made the shocking allegations at a leadership conference of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on Sunday.

He said the commission had recently recovered millions of naira from religious organisations.

Olukoyede said: “I want to appeal to those of us who are religious leaders to use our podiums not only to preach but also to demonstrate good character.

“Some religious organizations are more corrupt than public offices. I have evidence to that effect. If you are irresponsible as a religious person and you expect public officials to be responsible.

“They made you a pastor, and that’s when you became a big shot. We don’t even know what you do to earn a legitimate living.

“You live off the money of the ministry and the church or mosque. You can’t even explain the source of your wealth. Just last week, I had reason to recover millions from religious organizations.

“You see the speck in someone else’s eye, but meanwhile, there’s a log in your eye. We preach these things at the altar but under our noses, these things are happening, and sometimes we try to cover them up.”
