The match looked destined for a penalty shoot-out before substitute Mikel Merino rose to head home the winner from a pinpoint cross from Dani Olmo.

Germany pushed hard to equalise at the last moment, but Spain held on and advanced to the semi-finals.

Spain will face either France or Portugal in the semi-final.
