The legislator representing the federal electoral college obokun/oriade in the room of representatives, Hon. Busayo Oke asked for the abolition of state governments in Nigeria, insisting on the fact that they became stumbled for the basic development and the main collaborators to insecurity across the country.
Oke, who made the call during an exclusive interview on Frontline, a current business program on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Wednesday, argued that the concentration of power at state level had deprived the rural communities of significant governance and development.
“We need government at the local level, we have to hear the impact of the government at the base. The state should go. The state is the problem. I have traveled widely and I saw how rural people are thrived abroad, but here in Nigeria, people at rural level are suffering,” he said.
The legislator said that Nigeria should adopt a governance structure similar to the United Kingdom, where different levels of local governments guide development. According to him, the absence of an effective basic governance is fueling insecurity, underlining that the recent decision of the Supreme Court on the autonomy of the local government is a step in the right direction.
“The insecurity that is happening today in Nigeria is because there is no government at the level of local government. President Bola Tinubu took the bull from the horn with the sentence of the Supreme Court on the autonomy of the local government. This judgment should be implemented and respected,” said Oke.
The Ministry of Finance, the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the office of the general prosecutor of the Federation for having already respected the sentence, praised, ensuring that the allocations now go directly to the local councils.
Oke, however, has accused some state governments, in particular Osun, of frustrating basic governance and deviation of local allocations.
“The state government of Osun was everywhere, blackmailing the president, blackmailed the attorney general, blackmailed the CBN and even former governors.
Osun was a scam. Ask traditional sovereigns the last time they got their legal 25 %: they don’t understand it, “he said.
The legislator also identified the gaps in the constitutional framework of Nigeria, including the absence of a census of the population since 2006.
He claimed that obsolete figures distort the representation at the federal level.
“Good government requires adequate representation. Lagos is under -actor, as well as Osun, because the populations have tripled since the last census,” he said.
Oke further praised the administration of Tinubu for reforms in the anti-anti-innest war, noting that anti-corruption agencies are now more professional and respectful of the law, leading to greater sentences and recoveries.
He quoted the progress in information technology as the main reason why fraudulent practices such as “419 letters” drastically reduced.
He also supported the message on the day of the independence of Tinubu, exhorting the Nigerians to exercise patience while the government continues to stabilize the economy and support the fight against insecurity.
“President Tinubu has constantly respected the Constitution by releasing assignments to both states and local governments.
He gave states what belongs to them and to local governments their quotas. The problem is what states have done with such allocations, “said Oke.
