On Monday, demonstrators stormed the Abuja branch of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) to request the immediate release of the popular social media activist Martins Otse, better known as Growarkman (VDM).
Singing slogans and tags waving with inscriptions such as “#freevdm”, “activism is not a shame”, “Vdm is the liberator of the masses” and “VDM has not committed any crime”, the protesters have accused the authorities of having targeted the influencer for his explicit activism.
Some demonstrators were seen protesting in a moving vehicle, singing freevdm on the streets of Abuja.
Manydarkman was recently arrested by agents of the Commission for economic and financial crimes (EFCC) for the accusations of cyberstalking.
Since then his arrest has unleashed a wave of online repercussions, with critics who support a politically motivated attempt to silence the dissenting rumors.
According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, the activist was attacked and arrested by the EFCC agents in the premises of Gtbank, a complaint that fueled the speculations on the possible complicity of the bank.
GTBANK, however, denied any involvement in the arrest, releasing CCTV movies to refute the accusations.
