Strong and alive democracy in Nigeria, by Bayo Onanuga – Thage

We have read the alarming statements orchestrated by discontented opposition characters, some crusaders of partisan human rights and emergency defenders of democracy for the recent debtings of the key members of opposition parties in the government of all progressives.

The seismic change caused by the defection of the governor of the state of the delta, the Sheriff Oborevwori, the former governor and vice presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of people in the last elections, dr. Ifeanyi Okowo and the main political actors in the state of the delta certainly launched the opposition and their disorder sympathizers.

While the elements of the opposition are understandably broken and disillusioned for the failure of their fabulous great coalition to obtain traction, we find disturbing that have resorted to avenge false accusations of the promotion of a state of a part against President Bola Tinubu, who is working very hard to decade inverse of economic discrepancy of our country.

Contrary to false statements in the propaganda materials sponsored in circulation through mainstream and social media, democracy is not threatened in Nigeria. The accusations that the administration is moving towards authoritarianism are unfounded and exaggerated.

We must add that no policy, official action or directive of the presidency tries to “dismantle democracy” or “weaken the opposition or create a unique state”. The accusations of corruption, blackmail and armament of state institutions exist only in the idle minds of politicians and their agents who have failed in their duty of opposition assigned.

The opposition cannot blame President Tinubu and the APC of government for their poor organization, indiscipline and serious incompetence in the management of their business. It is certainly not part of the task of President Tinubu organizing or strengthening the opposition parties.

We find curiously that those who celebrated the defection of the former Governor of the State of Kaduna, Mallam Nasir El-Romai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the formation of a great regional coalition with the sole objective of defeating President Tinubu and the author of 2027 are the same elections.

While the defenders of the last days of democracy did not raise any anxious voice against discontented politicians who throw an anti-Pinubu coalition, anti-PEC long dangerous regional lines, even before Iner blows the whistle for party politicism, are quick to attribute political changes in some states in “flooring, blackmail and blackmail and blackmail

Without any misunderstanding, freedom of association, freedom of speech and freedom of choice are part of the precious ideals of democracy. When politicians and citizens cannot freely join any association or political party of their choice or cannot openly express their opinions, democracy is endangered. Those who oppose the Tinubu administration should understand that they can issue diatribe, without fear, against the government because we practice democracy.

It is hypocrisy, when opposition politicians and their collaborators in the movement of “human rights” want that the president’s party must implode so that they can get an electoral advantage and cry Wolf when their desire does not materialize.

We want to say that democracy is not threatened or undermined simply because politicians exercise their association rights. The Nigerians who migrate to the APC and express support for Tinubu are making this free will, based on the belief that the reforms performed are in the interest of the Nigerians and the generation not yet born. It is a serious disservice for democracy itself for these emergency defenders of democracy to delegitimize the political choices of some Nigerians while supporting the choices of others to form a coalition against Tinubu and APC.

Under President Tinubu, democracy is strong and the multi -party democratic system will continue to thrive without obstacles. His administration is definitely committed to supporting and strengthening the democratic bases on which our fourth republic has remained since 1999

Politicians who change the affiliation of the party are not new or peculiar of Nigeria. In the most advanced democracies, there are ready examples of important politicians, statists and women who have changed their parties.

The president Tinubu and the national working committee of the APC, under the guidance of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, deserve praise for having made the party to practicable and attractive power for all the Nigerians willing to participate in the democratic process.

President Tinubu is a declared and firmly believed democrat in multi -party democracy. His political activism and democratic credentials in the galvanization and strengthen opposition platforms as a force that defeated a president in office and the then party to power attest to his profound credibility as a tested and relentless defender of multi -partisan democracy.

We urge all the Nigerians to unite the administration in the protection of our democracy respecting their choices and giving a wide place to the street vendors of alarming narratives rooted in fiction.
