Super Falcons maintain position in FIFA world rankings

Nigeria’s Super Falcons retained their 36th position in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

The latest rankings were published on the world football body’s official website on Friday, August 16, 2024.

In Africa, Falcons remain the top-ranked team, followed by Banyana Banyana from South Africa.

Their ranking is not surprising, considering their disappointing showing at this summer’s Paris Olympics.

The Falcons finished last in a tough group that included Olympic finalists Brazil, Japan and world champions Spain.

In their opening match against Brazil, the Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat, followed by another 1-0 loss to Spain.

Their match against Japan also ended in a 3-1 defeat, leaving the team disappointed with the outcome of their return to the Olympics.

Another African representative in Paris, Zambia, rose to 62nd place.

Like the Falcons, Zambia also lost all three of their group games in their second Olympic appearance.

Other African teams that have improved include South Africa, who are now in 50th place, and Tunisia, who are in 58th place.

The United States, the Olympic champions in Paris, reclaimed the top spot, while silver medallists Brazil moved up to eighth and Spain dropped to third.

The next FIFA Women’s World Rankings will be released on December 20, 2024.
