The Department of State Services presented a criminal accusation of five counts against the activist and publisher of Sahara journalists, Omoyel Sowore, at the Federal High Court of Abuja for the alleged defamation of President Bola Tinubu.
The DSS accused Sowore of describing the president as a “criminal” in the X and Facebook posts. The accusations, presented on Tuesday 16 September 2025, also list X Corp. and a destination as co-accused.
Previously, DSS had invited Sowore to what he described as a “false and harmful” social media post against the president.
In a letter of September 7, 2025 and signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the DSS manager, Sowore was aimed at collecting the declaration and to issue public excuses within seven days.
The Agency has mentioned a place since August 26, 2025, in which Sowore presumably derived the observations of Tinubu on corruption during a trip to Brazil, referring to him as a “criminal”.
According to DSS, the observation was “repugnant, derogatory and able to encourage public disorders”, with the potential to undermine the President’s reputation both at home and abroad, thus threatening national unity and peace.
The letter also requested that Sowore withdrawn the post on X, published excuses in two national newspapers and two television stations and sends a formal representation to the DSS headquarters in Abuja or via e -mail.
However, Sowore refused to conform, insisting on the fact that he would not eliminate the posts.
According to him, defamation was a personal question that the president, feeling in the balance, can seek compensation in court through his attorney general and the Minister of Justice.
“It is difficult to believe that someone has remained sensible in these offices that Nigeria should work. Regardless of this, I will be present every time the case is assigned for the process,” Sowore said in response on Tuesday.
The DSS has now proceeded with legal actions, presenting criminal accusations against him at the High Federal Court
