Supreme Court upholds former PHB Bank MD, Atuche’s six-year prison sentence for fraud

The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the sentence of former managing director of Bank PHB, Francis Atuche.

Judge Lateefat Okunnu of the Lagos State Special Offenses Court, Ikeja, in June 2021 sentenced Atuche to six years in prison for the N25.7 billion fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged the former banker, his wife and PHB Bank chief financial officer Ugo Anyanwu with various fraud charges.

The other two convicts were each sentenced to four years in prison.

The Court of Appeal also upheld their conviction.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, Atuche filed a petition for a suspension of sentence with the highest court.

In Friday’s hearing, Judge Moore Adumein, who read out the verdict, said Atuche failed to explain why the previous verdict should be set aside.
