Suspected thugs on Monday night set fire to the residence of former federal lawmaker, Senator Frank Ibezim, at Ezeoke-Nsu in Ehime Mbano local government area of Imo State.
The hoodlums also torched several facilities at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Study Center in the area.
The attack follows reports that the Federal Government plans to renovate NOUN facilities as a training ground for repentant Boko Haram insurgents.
Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Tijani Mohammed, recently visited the national training facility for vulnerable groups located within the NOUN study center.
A resident of the community told reporters on Tuesday that the incident occurred around 9pm on Monday.
“Many in our community have spoken out against the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) training project in the area, especially when there are no IDPs in the state.
“The project planners were insensitive to the upheaval in the region,” he said.
Spokesman of the state police command, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement in Owerri.

He described the attack as a barbaric and condemnable act.
The spokesperson said the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had deployed the commando tactical unit to identify and arrest those responsible for the act.
The statement read: “In addition, the Commissioner has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
“This unfortunate incident reflects a disturbing trend of violence that is undermining the safety and security of our communities.
“The command firmly opposes such acts and will take all necessary measures in synergy with other security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Furthermore, Danjuma appealed to the public not to spread fake news or make inflammatory statements that could disrupt the country’s current peaceful stability.
“He warned that anyone found guilty of spreading false information would face severe consequences.”
