Suspected Vandalo electrocuted while trying to tamper the transformer at Borno University

A man still to be identified on Sunday morning was electrocuted while presumably tried to vandalize an electricity transformer located inside the premises of the Borno State University, Maiduguri.

The deceased, who is believed to be between 40 and 50 years, was discovered lifeless near the transformer by the security staff of the campus and the residents, triggering tension throughout the institution.

Confirming the accident, the spokesman for the Borno State Police Command, Asp Kenneth Daso, said that the preliminary investigations showed that the man had attempted to tamper the structure before they were were they were they were were they were they were they were were they were they were to be stuck.

“It is quite unfortunate. We received a rescue call from Borno State University that a body was found near a transformer,” Daso said to journalists.

“From the initial observations, the deceased seems to be between 40 and 50 years old. He tried to vandalize the transformer and was electrocuted in the process, which led to his death.”

Daso revealed that the agents of the Bulunkutu Police Division and the Borno State Fire Brigade officials quickly responded to the scene. The remains of the victim were subsequently evacuated to the morgue for further medical tests.

He also explained that forensic experts were lined up to collect evidence to help investigations on the accident.

“At this moment, our goal is to ensure that the body has evacuated and subjected to medical examination. Our forensic experts are also on the field to collect every available test that will help in our investigations,” he added.

The accident has again highlighted the growing threat of the vandalism of public power infrastructures in Nigeria. According to the Nigeria transmission company (TCN), the country loses billions of Naira every year for acts of vandalism on transformers, power lines and other critical electricity structures (see report here).

Residents in Borno State University have expressed concern about the safety of public services within the state, underlining that these acts often throw communities in prolonged darkness and interrupt academic and economic activities.

The efforts to identify the deceased are underway, while the police authorities urged the members of the public with useful information to help trace his identity and possible accomplices.
