Suspected vandals electrocuted in Benue

The suspected vandal, Inalegwu Elias, was electrocuted while trying to damage a transformer of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) on Friday evening in Benue State.

Spokesman of the state police command, Sewuese Anene, confirmed the incident to journalists on Saturday in Makurdi.

He said the victim was found hanging from a double transformer pole in the state’s Otukpo area.

Additionally, JED’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Adakole Elijah, said the incident had been reported to the police.

He said: “Yes, it happened last night and he was electrocuted. It is a transformer belonging to the computer based transformer for JAMB.

“So, I can confirm that the electric shock was real. This is clearly an attempt to damage the transformer. We have had a high spate of transformer vandalism in Otukpo town here.

“Actually, the transformer is well maintained, it is a transformer installed on a pole.

“So, if someone climbs, it’s beyond my imagination. That is, it was intentional, a clear case of vandalism.

“I believe he went with very bad motives and unfortunately, he paid with his life.”
