The tragedy hit Tuesday afternoon in the village of Dandalama, in the area of the local government of Dawakin Tofa in the state of Kano, like a 17 -year -old boy, Lurwanu Suleiman, drowned in an open water body.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the accident in a declaration issued on Wednesday by its public relations official, Saminu Abdullahi.
According to the declaration, the agency received an emergency call from a resident, Malam Aminu Dandalama, exactly at 12:54, which caused the immediate deployment of a rescue team on the scene.
“Our men arrived at the place around 13:25 and, unfortunately, the victim was taken up by the water,” said Abdullahi.
The deceased’s body was subsequently delivered to the head of the Dandalama village department, Alhaji Safiyan Usman.
Although the exact circumstances surrounding the drowning remain unclear, the firefighters spokesman noted that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.
The accident increases the growing concerns for safety around unprotected water bodies, especially during the rainy season, while the communities of the whole country grasp the risks placed by open and unattended water sources.
