The absence of witnesses on Wednesday stalled the trial of two doctors, Michael Atiba and Michael Ugbeye, at the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja.

The doctors are on trial for the alleged manslaughter of a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi.

When the matter was called on Wednesday, Justice Oyindamola Ogala was informed by the prosecution that the witness who was meant to give evidence in the case was unable to appear in court due to illness.

The judge therefore adjourned the case until October 7 for the start of the trial.

The Lagos State Government on March 25 indicted doctors for alleged involvement in the manslaughter of a deceased patient.

Specifically, Atiba, a doctor at the Gbagada General Hospital, and Ugbeye, a Consultant at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Lagos State government advisor, AO Azeez, said the incident occurred on October 21, 2023.

He also informed the court that the incident occurred at No. 20, Michael Adekoya Street, Ilupeju, Lagos State.

He added that Atiba and Ugbeye unlawfully caused the death of the victim through the application of wrong medication before and after surgery.

The offence, according to his lawyer, is contrary to Section 224 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.

However, the doctors pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting Judge Ogala to grant a trial date.
