The Rotary Club of Abuja Highrise has called on members to focus more on conceptualizing and executing megaprojects that will have a lasting impact for the benefit of communities.
Making the appeal in Abuja on Friday in his keynote address marking the first anniversary of the Highrise Rotary Club, Rotarian Dr. Chigoke Ekechukwu, warned against “short-sighted” projects such as boreholes and urged the club to think big, seek government-private sector partnerships and attract sponsorship from outside Rotary circles.
“Rotary presidents shouldn’t limit themselves to one-year projects. We need to create programs that truly change lives,” he said.
Supporting the call, the District Governor of District 9127, Dr. Prince Joy Nky Okoro, in her speech, highlighted that impactful projects define the legacy of Rotary.
“As cautioned by the keynote speaker, our projects should be community-driven and impactful and not ephemeral,” he said.
The club’s president, Rotarian Alimot Afe, listed achievements since the club was founded on 11 September 2024 which he said include the rehabilitation of the neonatal ward at Nyanya General Hospital, peacebuilding campaigns, health awareness with HIV and hepatitis testing, solar-powered boreholes, tuition support for 200 displaced pupils, professional training for women and young people and environmental awareness programmes.
The club, which started with 25 members, has also earned numerous recognitions, including the 2024 Foundation Dinner Grant Winner and the All-Giving Polio Plus Fund Club.
The anniversary concluded with the members’ awards ceremony and an evening of music, dance and joy.
