Seven people died and dozens more were injured when airstrikes hit a funeral event in the Nuba Mountains in West Kordofan last Friday, according to local sources, the UN aid coordination office said, Ocha.
The war, which began in April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and the Sudanese Armed Forces, continues to have an alarming impact on civilians.
The funeral attack followed a drone attack on the Teaching Hospital in the East Darfur capital, Al Deain, which killed 70 people on March 20.
Rising insecurity continues to force families in West Kordofan to flee, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In neighboring South Kordofan, a drone strike and an attack on the city of Dilling reportedly caused three deaths on Saturday, with local NGOs reporting that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly.
Humanitarian access is hampered
Ongoing fighting and repeated drone attacks have also disrupted vital supply lines across the Kordofan region.
The main roads connecting the city of El Obeid in North Kordofan to the cities of Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan are increasingly unsafe, which has a direct impact on impede the movement of humanitarian supplies and commercial supplies.
“Bureaucratic processes further exacerbate these challenges”, the Secretary General’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric said, “with essential medical activities in El Obeid suspended for almost a month now.”
Meanwhile in Darfur, increasing insecurity and restrictions on humanitarian movement are hampering humanitarian access.
Humanitarian aid workers faced robberies and armed attacks along major routes, while some organizations were forced to halt operations altogetherso that vulnerable populations receive fewer services.
Fighting near the Ethiopian border
Likewise, escalating hostilities near the border with Ethiopia in Blue Nile State have severely hampered humanitarian operations. Movement outside the state capital Ed Damazine was largely suspended, cutting off access to people in need.
Due to increasing insecurity, in recent days more than 1,600 people have been displaced in the Geisan area of Blue Nile Statereport the migration agent.
Despite these challenges, the UN and its partners continue to respond to needs across Sudan. UN humanitarian aid coordinator OCHA reiterated that civilians must be protected at all times, as required by international humanitarian law.
“Attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure must stop,” Dujarric told reporters at a midday briefing Monday.
“We reiterate that all parties must ensure rapid, safe, unimpeded and unimpeded humanitarian accessincluding all major routes and wherever help is needed.”
