Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk described the Reds’ current form as a mentally tough and difficult period after losing 4-0 to Man City in the FA Cup quarter-finals at the weekend.
In a chat with the club’s website, the Dutch international acknowledged that the players have disappointed the coach, the fans and themselves, citing in particular a lack of fighting spirit.
“Very difficult, very difficult to accept, very difficult to be out there. A very tough day and I also feel bad for the fans.

“All the responsibility, we are the ones who do not act on the field. We know how the world works. We have to stay united, despite how difficult it is. It is a big blow that we are out of the FA Cup because until the penalty I don’t think there was any problem.
“I can understand (the fans leaving before full time). They’ve obviously been through ups and downs, as obviously we have been.
“Obviously we would love for them to stay ahead until the end, but if you are 4-0 down and the way we played the second half, then I can understand the anger. In my time at Liverpool we have been through difficult times and at the moment it is difficult too.”
