The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed recent false rumors about the introduction of the ₦5,000 note featuring President Bola Tinubu.
The apex bank also dismissed claims that Polaris Bank was undergoing liquidation.
The Apex Bank clarified that both reports were fake and urged Nigerians to rely only on official communications.
Earlier on Thursday, a viral image of a ₦5,000 note featuring President Tinubu circulated widely on social media.
In response, CBN confirmed that the image was created digitally and branded it “FAKE” on X’s official account (Twitter).
The bank reiterated that no such denominations have been introduced.
Regarding rumors of the liquidation of Polaris Bank, online claims emerged stating that Polaris Bank was liquidated because it failed to meet the recapitalization deadline.

The rumor was spread by user
“Polaris Bank is currently undergoing a liquidation process as it is unable to meet the Recapitalization requirements of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the bank will be placed under the NDIC for liquidation.
“The bank’s license may also be revoked soon, However, Billionaire Razaq Okoya has submitted an offer to buy the Bank, and reinstate it, to meet CBN requirements.

In response to the post, CBN shared a screenshot labeled “Fake Content” and wrote:
“This content is fake. Let the people be guided. Nigeria’s Banking System is Safe and Secure.”
The apex bank further advised Nigerians to only rely on official CBN statements for the latest information on currency and banking matters.
