The Chairperson of the Labor Party (LP) in the State of Lagos, Dayo Ekong, has called for the 2023 party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to stop for a moment and reflect on his political path, warning that his influence among voters decreases.
In a statement issued through his official X grip on Tuesday, Ekong said that the improvement of Obi’s politics in 2023 was not merely a product of his personality but was also driven by party structure, grassroots mobilization, and public longing for change. He argues that the momentum that encouraged him was decreasing because of the decisions that divided and inconsistent political alliances.
“In 2023, the Nigerians gathered behind him because he represented a new alternative,” Ekong said. “But today, his actions began to erode the foundation of that support.”
The head of the LP LP refers to the support of the new Obi as evidence of its declining influence, emphasizing that his support no longer guarantees the success of the election.
He quoted the Edo 2024 Governor Election as a main example, noting that although Obi supported Olumide Akpata, LP candidate, the party lost to the all Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo. Similar losses were recorded in the 2023 IMO Governor Election, where Obi’s choice candidate, Athan Achonu, was defeated by Hope Uzodimma APC.
Ekong further described Obi’s decision to support Justina Azuka from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the constituents of the Constituency onitsha North 1 recently as a mistake in the main political calculation. According to him, Obi’s open endorsement of the opposition candidates-including wearing ADC-Gagal branded campaign materials to produce results, because ADC only got 1,909 votes. The Labor Party also performs badly, while all the Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) ensures victory with 7,774 votes.
Quoting Governor Chukwuma Soludo from the State of Anambra, Ekong said the results of the selection of interruptions indicated that the “death” of LP and ADC in the state, underline the influence of Obi which is decreasing even in his base.
“A wise politician must know when to stop and think deeply about the direction he is aiming for,” Ekong advised.
He urged Obi to make peace with LP leadership and prioritize trust in the party before the 2027 general election.
“We openly criticize the Wike for the PDP/APC association, but we turn on the face of the LP/ADC OBI association,” he added. “Voters are watching and slowly deciding about 2027.”
