The Chinese embassy in Nigeria reacted with caution to the accusations made by 12 Nigerian workers recently saved by the Central African Republic (CAR), who accused their Chinese employers of sexual abuse and failure to pay wages.
Reacting to the relationships circulating in the media, a Chinese official revealed that the embassy has attributed great importance to the matter.
While the embassy said that it will investigate the problem, he underlined that the accusations are taken seriously and that the right trial will be followed.
The embassy said: “We have also just noticed the relevant relationships and attribute great importance to this subject. We will have immediately started an investigation. Before the results of the investigations are released, we ask that the information will not be disseminated or mentioned.
“The Chinese government constantly requires all Chinese citizens abroad to comply with the laws and regulations of their host countries and conduct commercial activities with all the rules and applicable requirements”.

The reaction comes after the Nigerian workers, who returned to the country last week, recounted overflowing experiences of abuse, hunger and failure to pay wages at the hands of Chinese mining employers in the car.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (Nidcom), who received workers in Abuja, committed themselves to pursuing justice for them, while the embassy claimed that the result of the investigations will guide further actions. [Eagle Online]
