The court ordered X to pay an additional fine of $1.5 million to continue operations in Brazil

Social media giant, X (formerly Twitter), was forced to pay an additional fine of $1.5 million to continue operations in Brazil.

Brazil’s Supreme Court shut down X nationwide because its owners did not appoint a local representative for the site or comply with a court order to suspend certain accounts.

The ban forced supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to hold demonstrations protesting judge Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered the suspension of X because many users were unable to engage on the platform and even just look at their feeds.

However, X, which has 21 million active users in Brazil, could soon resume service in the country if it is willing to pay additional fines.

The social network may now “immediately resume activities on national territory” on condition that it pays a penalty of 10 million reais, or about $1.9 million, the country’s Supreme Court Judge, Alexandre de Moraes, said in a ruling.

Additionally, X was previously fined 18.3 million reais ($3.4 million).

To pay the penalty, Brazil blocked X’s account and the Starlink satellite internet business belonging to its owner, Elon Musk.
