The victims were reported to be rushed to the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Bida, but surrender to the disease in the midst of lack of important medicines needed for treatment.

“Yes, there is a diphtheria outbreak in this regional government area and we do everything possible to control the spread,” said Gana.

He associated the high number of deaths in part with vaccine doubts among parents in the affected community.

“The high death toll is as a result of some parents who refuse to surrender their children for vaccination in affected areas. However, we thank our partners for providing medicines to support the country’s responses,” he added.

Gana further assures that the situation has been contained, with steps to prevent further death.
