The disappearance of Solomon Ewuga, a painful loss

There is no shock absorber for the news on death every time the final terminator decides to issue the final calls to anyone who chooses. In other words, no matter how strongly your body is designed, the passage of a loved one has a way to evade the shock absorber just to reach you. On this life journey, Summons digs every step we take, thumb for thumb and second for second. Some were lucky enough not to answer calls. When this happens, the person is said to have deceived death.

Responding to the final call has nothing to do with age. Some respond to theirs when they are young, others in their adulthood, while the lucky ones shook the call up to old age. Therefore, there are those who are called while in the uterus, the born born. This life is, in fact, an enigma.

After offering a sacrifice for lunch late to The God of Grot last Tuesday, I chose my cell phone to navigate through social media while the meal was settled. Then, my eyes fell on a Facebook post that announced the death of a senior colleague and a brother, Barr. Solomon Ewuga. His photography captured my attention for the first time and jumped in conclusion that my former boss had finally landed the Aren Eggon stool. Recently, a friend hypothesized that he could land the free stool. There was nothing that he suggested that it was ill lately … as such his disappearance was sudden for me and many others close to him.

However, my heart collected the speed while I ran only for the organ that would literally end up in the mouth, and I didn’t like the taste at all: Barr. Solomon Ewuga is dead! The news struck me as lightning. My face must have turned into stone for shock. I opened my mouth to say something, but no word came out. My mind returned to the meeting he had with the kidnappers a few years ago. I feared for his life. However, God was with him during captivity; He returned home in a single piece and I got off the Atterorhooks. We talked a couple of times after having regained his freedom. We also spoke briefly after the disappearance of the pilot daughter in a plane crash in Cameroon about three years ago.

Like me, Barr. Ewuga was a man from Jos. While working with the standard newspapers of Nigeria, I managed a flourishing dress of public relations located west of the mines, at a whistle distance from the imposing JD Gomwalk House. Appointed Adpure, an amalgam of advertising and public relations, has set the rhythm in the sector. I was a normal caller in the office in which I also forged a close friendship with one of his students, now a lawyer, Haroun Harry Audu. Barr. Haroun stands out for his Suvavity.

In 1988, Ewuga was sucked into the Publishing Company Ltd. Plateau Publishing, as general manager to supervise the standard newspaper group. I was about to leave the organization when he took the appointment. One afternoon, he invited me to his office to discuss my release. He spoke to me clearly: “You know that you cannot leave when I have just been named. I couldn’t wait to work with you as a personal pioneer who can walk for the complex with closed eyes. We can discuss what pushes you to leave and satisfied your requests”.

I felt highly honored and flattering at the same time. A disturbing silence hovered around his large office furnished with taste. By breaking the quiet, he said he would give me a day or two to mull out for his reason. However, I told him that I had spent a year to ruminate for the decision and that there was nothing more on the plate to be chewed!

In the short time with which I worked with Barr. Ewuga, and having been good friends and professional colleagues for almost a decade, we got along. A guru of public relations was a good manager of men and resources. He was also a man of honor and integrity and a tank of knowledge who knew how to guide his staff to achieve the objectives prepared for the company. I ran because it didn’t come soon. At some point, I almost changed my mind. I liked to work with him as I did with the boss David Atth and Malam Samuila Makama, two iconic technocrats, in front of him. The general manager of the Pioneer of the company, Mr. Ian Relf, an Irish, completed the trio of leaders with whom I liked to work. In evaluating my performance, Atth once described me as a resource for society. Atth and Ewuga had the same traits and quality of the personality: high, brilliant, altruistic, urban and tireless. And they were good dresses to start. What have separated them were their complexions. While Atth had clear skin, Ewuga was black ebony. The duo adapts to the definition of women’s men! I tell you.

Barr. Ewuga also followed Atth’s steps. When the latter came out of the standard in 1978, Virlò in politics and ended up in the Chamber of Representatives in 1979. After his Gmship in the PPC, Ewuga also entered politics before the 1999 government elections in the state of Nasarawa. He was the deputy candidate for the governor in Barr. Abdullahi Adamu on the platform of the Democratic Party of people (PDP). In the end they won the race. However, Barr. Ewuga was only two years in the saddle when President Olusegun Obasanjo sucked him in his toilet and the Minister of State for the territory of the federal capital (FCT), Abuja, where his performance was impactful.

After his mandate in the FCT, he returned to his base of Nasarawa. In 2007, he ran to the Senate seat which represents the Senatorial District of North Nasarawa. He won, making him the third trip: deputy governor, Minister of State and Senator of the FCT. In all these three political shipments, Barr. Ewuga gave a good report of himself, leaving behind the legacy that were difficult to combine, let alone overcome.

The last time I met Sen. Ewuga was in 2010 or so in the office of our common friend, Chris Iyimoga, at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Iner) where he was a federal commissioner. It was a happy meeting for both. We pumped hands, hugged and sparkle for a long time. He was surprised to have moved to Abuja after having lived in Jos for so long that I could easily spend while the alternative Gbom Jos Jos. We all roar out of laughter. So, we saw the beautiful old days in Jos and what had become of our beloved city after the eruption of religious and ethnic upheavals that were tormenting the house of peace and tourism.

Born on June 19, 1955 in Nasarawa Eggon, Barr. Ewuga attended St. Joseph’s College, Akwanga, and made his high school certificate (HSC) at the famous St. Louis College, Jos. He later proceeded to the University of Jos to pursue a degree in Political Science and consequently was bitten by the political bug. It is not surprising that he ended up as a politician, where he sculpted a niche for himself. Later he bent to conquer by enrolling in a degree program in Law in his Alma Mater and achieved the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). Barr. Ewuga was called to the Nigerian bar in 1988, and it was so fascinating to look at him to juggle with public relations with the law. It was the reason why he excelled in politics, legislation and public service.

Although Barr. Ewuga had just spent three months on the 7th floor of life when he passed, he left his footprints on the rocks that was almost impossible. He got a lot!

It may be the good Lord to grant his soul eternal and his family the courage to bear the painful loss.
