A encouraging Easter procession in the Billiri regional government in the Gombe State turned into a tragedy scene when the truck accident claimed the lives of five people and left eight others who were injured, triggering widespread public anger and subsequent protests.
The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the destructive incident in a statement released on Monday, which stated that a trailer truck, transporting seeds from the state of Adamawa to Gombe, experienced brake failure. The uncontrolled vehicle then entered the crowd of Christian worshipers who celebrated Easter in the City of Billiri, also injured several Muslim observers.
DSP Buhari Abdullahi, a police spokesman, issued a statement in the name of the Police Commissioner, Gombe State Command, CP Bello Yahaya, confirmed the death: “The accident resulted in the death of two men and three women.” He further stated that “the other eight victims were rushed to the Federal, Gombe, and General Hospital in Billiri, where they are currently receiving treatment and are reported in a stable condition.”
As a result of tragic accidents seeing tension rising rapidly in the city. “The disadvantaged young man reportedly burned the trailer, the shops were looted, and stormed the Billiri Division Police Headquarters.” The statement detailed the violence directed at law enforcement: “The protesters throw stones and other objects to officers, which resulted in injury to the division police officers and several personnel.”

The police command reported that “Police Operations from the Billiri Division responded quickly to an emergency and helped restore order,” and that “the presence of security has since been strengthened to prevent further details of law and order.”
The official police statement includes criticism of the reaction of violence: “The order to condemn the act of violation of the law and urge residents to remain calm and let the law take the way. Investigations are currently ongoing to ensure the full situation around the incident.”
Commissioner Bello Yahaya conveyed his sympathy to a family who lost a loved one and prayed for the rapid recovery of those who were injured. He also submitted a direct request to the community: “He also appealed to community members to remain peaceful, obey the law, and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.”
Authorities have indicated that they continue to monitor the situation that is strictly volatile when investigating the roots of the accident.
