A professor of financial mathematics, Obi-Nnamdi Agwuegbo, has blamed the prolonged economic challenges of Nigeria on the inability of subsequent governments to embrace the statistical reasoning in the formulation of policies and in national planning.
Agwuegbo, who held the 102nd inaugural lesson of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abokuta (Funab) on Wednesday, argued that without strategies based on data, the aspirations of the development of the nation would remain a mirage.
The theme “statistical reasoning: a panacea for national development”, was held at Prof. Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building on the campus.
According to Agwuegbo, who is a professor of stochastic modeling in the Statistical Department, College of Physical Sciences (Colphys), the analog approach of the Governance of Nigeria continues to hinder growth, innovation and the significant political impact.
“It would be a dream of a dream of dreaming that Nigeria realizes its full potential without the application of statistical methods,” he said.
The professor described the statistical reasoning such as the foundation of the solid decision -making process, underlining his power to convert the raw data into impossible intuitions capable of modeling effective policies and transforming national sectors.
“No research field can claim scientific credibility without statistical tools,” he observed. “From health diagnostics to production quality control, statistical methods guide reliability and efficiency.”
Agwuegbo has supported the mandatory integration of statistical reasoning in all post -laurea programs in the Nigerian universities.
He also asked for the establishment of robust and accessible national data platforms to improve research and innovation.
“Without a statistical interpretation, the data are only a series of incomprehensible numbers. It is only through the statistical reasoning that the data become significant, guiding informed decisions and conclusions based on evidence,” he explained.
He also urged the institutions to learn to incorporate statistical literacy into their curricula to cultivate critical thinking and provide students with data involvement with data.
Speaking to the event, the deputy condemnance of Funabs, Prof. Babunde Kehinde, represented by the deputy vice -changing (academic), Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, he praised Agwuegbo for what he described as a “penetrating and stimulating” lesson.
Kehinde praised the academic contributions of Agwuegbo, including her work as an external examiner at the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos, and its belonging to various professional bodies such as the Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA), American Statistical Association (ASA), International Biometric Society (IBS) and the Nigera Statistical Society (PSSN).
The scholar wrote over 40 articles in respectable local and international magazines.
