The expert urges a new approach to the care of women’s motherhood

A prominent voice in obstetrics and maternal health, Dr. Amina Yamgnane, urged the health workers and the public in general in Lagos to rethink the approach to women’s care first, during and after childbirth.

His message was delivered in a special conference entitled “Rethinking Maternity Care”, held at the Française de Lagos alliance.

Dr. Yamgnane, a French obstetric-hate gynecologist specialized in fetal medicine and high-risk pregnancies, brings over 15 years of experience from the best European hospitals.
He currently directs the maternity department at the American Hospital in Paris and leads the French national working group for respectful maternity assistance.

This event marked Dr. Yamgnane’s first return to the African continent for years, a personal initiative led by his desire to reconnect, listen and learn from local realities.
His illustrious career includes the service as a resident leader at CLines Saint-Luc (Belgium), roles at the Paris Necker Hospital and the Foundation of La Clinique des Femmes in Paris in 2016, a pioneering center for cures focused on humans, with informed treatments on the trauma.

The conference convened a diversified public including doctors, obstetricians, nurses, hospital directors, medical educators and health investors. The central demand faced was how to provide care not only clinically safe but also respectful, dignified and truly adapted to the experiences of women.

In an era in which maternity assistance can often be perceived as excessively technical, depersonalized or even violent, the event was a collective appeal to pause, reflect and act. “This is more than a speech. It is an invitation to transform himself,” said dr. Yamgnane, encouraging all the parties interested in maternal health, from delivery rooms to political rooms, to imagine and implement a new standard of care that gives priority sincerely to women’s items, respects their choices and supports health workers in achieving these objectives.
