The legendary Nigerian goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, died at the age of 61 years after a long disease, Owosports.com.ng met.
The former Sotos de Super Eagles armchair died Thursday, leaving behind a legacy as one of Nigeria’s best football icons.
Known with love as “Dodomayana”, Rufai is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Nigerian football. His illustrious career covered more than two decades, during which he played professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
On the international stage, Rufai was a pillar of the Super Eagles. It was fundamental in Nigeria’s historical qualification for its first FIFA World Cup in 1994 and played a key role in the team’s triumph in the 1994 African Nations Cup in Tunisia.
Rufai also represented Nigeria in two World Cup tournaments and multiple editions of AFCon, gaining a general respect for his leadership, ability to detect a quiet presence in the goal.
His death comes on a tragic day for world football, which is also mourning for the loss of Liverpool and the Portugal striker, Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain earlier in the day, along with his brother.
The world of football is inclined in pain, since it says goodbye to two beloved figures.
