The Imo team leaves for Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival with 318 athletes

… state objectives improvement of performance in 33 sporting events

The Imo team officially left for the Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway 2024, with a contingent of 318 athletes and 118 officials.

The team left the state on Saturday afternoon, full of determination despite having faced some logistical challenges during the accumulation of the two -year competition.

The participation of the team had been in doubt until the approval of the last minute of the funds had been guaranteed by the executive governor of the Imo State, the distinct senator Hope Uzodimma.

The development raised the spirits inside the field, with the athletes now ready to give the best in the state of Ogun.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, the honorable commissioner for sport, the Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, delivered a short but encouraging message to the athletes before their departure. He urged the team to compete with integrity and fight for excellence, using the obstacles faced in view of the event as a motivation.

“You have been selected to represent the IMO state, and it is your duty to justify that honor. Competition clean and make the state proud,” said Onyeocha. He also ensured to the athletes and officials that all rights would have been duly provided.

Imo State participates in 33 sports, including swimming, weight lifting, powerlifting, arrows, hockey, athletics, judo, chess, scrabble, wrestling, taekwondo, abula, volleyball, beach volleyball and basketball, among others.

The Imo team aims to overcome its performances at the last national sports festival held in Asaba, the state of the delta, where the state has conquered 12 gold medals. With renewed hope and resilience, athletes are optimistic in having a stronger impact in Ogun.

The National Sports Festival remains the main Multi-Sport event of Nigeria and Imo State is determined to leave a lasting impression in this year’s edition.
