The national president of the Labor party, Julius Abure, reiterated the party’s commitment to be the political platform for the Nigerians who are often excluded from traditional political participation.
Abure made him known on Thursday during the inauguration of the party management physically challenged in Abuja. He stressed that the Labor Party stands out from other political parties deliberately creating space for marginalized in society.
He said: “We have our objectives rooted in social democracy. The party is for those who have no voice, for those who normally not be recognized in the scheme of things”.
Highlighting a reference result from the party in the general elections of 2023, Abure indicated a commercial motorcyclist – popularly known as Rider Okada – which emerged victorious in a house of the electoral representatives under the Labor Party platform.
According to him, this reflects the opening of the party to basic politicians and his desire to support individuals often put aside due to economic or physical limits.
“We made deliberated efforts to enhance those who are disabled, by gender, sex, physical conditions or financial status,” he said.
He added that the party considers people also politically and economically disadvantaged as “disabled”, observing that the exploitative political culture of Nigeria often spends people capable from the dispute for public offices.
“If you have what you need to drive, if you have a passion to develop your community but you don’t have the financial strength to apply for the office, you are politically disabled. That’s why there is the Labor party – to give you a platform,” said Abure.
He also accused the leaders of the party to live with the example, saying that charity has to start at home if the Labor party really tries to reform Nigeria. He claimed that personal change among party officials is the first step to achieve national transformation.
“If we say that we will change the country, we believe that the change should start with us. From the level of department upwards, the party officials must first embrace this vision of inclusion and reform,” he concluded.
The recently inaugurated direction is part of the largest strategy of the Labor Party to integrate people who live with disabilities and other vulnerable groups in politics and active governance.
