The Lagos Assembly spoke, when the police were determined to charge the leader of Nurtw for the alleged murder of the driver

The Lagos State Police Command has announced plans to charge the leader of the National Union of Road Transport (NURTW), Shamideen Adio, known as Shameleon, on Friday for alleged murder of driving rider on Lagos Island.

Adio, 55, was arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred on September 17, 2025, during a fight at Tapa Street. The victim, who was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle, was reportedly attacked by the union leader and his colleagues.

Witnesses accuse that the driver was repeatedly beaten with helmets and boxing until he fainted. He was then rushed to the hospital, where he died of an injury suffered in the attack.

Confirming the development, the Deputy of the Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, said the suspect was currently being detained at the Department of State Criminal Investigation (SCID), Panti-Yaba, and would appear in court on Friday.

Meanwhile, the House of the Lagos State Assembly has intervened, urged that Adio and his accomplice to face full prosecution.

The Chairperson of the DPR Committee for Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, condemned the murder, describing it as “actions that must be cursed by every Nigerian who intended well.”

“We can only imagine the driver who left home to make a living, not returning because someone who thought he was above the law decided to take his life. The sanctity of human life has no alternative, and this case must be handled to function as a prevention,” said Adedeji.
